The Build-A-Bike program, taking place on Saturday, May 16 at each of our 27 Golden State Foods Foundation facilities across the United States, aims to provide children ages 7-9 with a bicycle as a means of teaching them invaluable fundamentals, such as personal responsibility as well as the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through physical activity.  As this will be a nationwide GSF Foundation event, we have an incredible opportunity to gain widespread recognition for the big hearts and hard work of all those involved!   We have picked this date as it coincides with ARMED FORCES DAY and we will be building bikes on Joint Base Lewis McChord for children of those currently serving in our military.  The event on base takes place at the McChord Youth Center located on 3032 Dogwood St.

On May 16th, our associates will work one-on-one with a child as they help them to build their first bicycle. This experience allows our associates to share their time and talent with a child, but also shows them firsthand the remarkable difference their involvement will make in shaping this child’s future.  Those of us who work with the Build-A-Bike program believe that a bicycle is not merely a mode of transportation; rather, we see it as a way to provide children with invaluable life lessons that will help build personal character, self-awareness and a sense of responsibility in a truly unique way. A bike can help a child develop his or her sense of self-reliance, risk and reward, adventure, strength and character.
