The little things most of us take for granted are far more than little things to many. A solid roof over our heads. A light in a window of a safe place we call home. The cozy security of knowing where our family will sleep tonight. Think a moment about how different your life would be if those things vanished. In this season of gratitude and giving, you have a unique chance to help your neighbors through a designated gift to Homes First via Give Local 2021, which runs November 8 to 19.

Give Local 2021 is an online giving campaign hosted by The Community Foundation of South Puget Sound to support area nonprofits. It gives your favorite non-profits an extra boost because each donation made during the campaign gets a proportional match from the Bonus Fund, made possible by a generous local giver.

What better way to help the community grow than by knowing your tax deductible gift is helping someone who lives right here, and that every dollar goes to your chosen non-profit because of generous support from local businesses that cover credit card fees.

Not only that, but the giving couldn’t be easier!

  1. Visit the Give Local website between now and November 19.
  2. Select the Homes First choice and learn more about our work.
  3. Click the Donate button to make a secure online tax-deductible donation.

Why Homes First? No other local nonprofit zeroes in on the fact that having a place to call home is the key to building a solid, responsible life. This unique organization, founded in 1990 by local leaders, provides affordable rental homes to those who need them most. That is its core value, and what no other local nonprofit has as its central focus. Homes First has partnerships with other community organizations and nonprofits to serve tenants’ other needs, such as disability support, senior services, substance abuse help and mental health counseling.

Homes First is the landlord–and lifeline–many need to take the step away from a life of chaos and pain.

“Diane,” a Homes First tenant, knows that firsthand. After time in California trying to navigate domestic violence, human trafficking, addiction and family trauma, she found Homes First just a year ago through a combination of determination and hard work. Diane has been clean and sober more than seven years and will celebrate a very special Thanksgiving this year, giving thanks for the chance to build a new life with the solid foundation of a safe home. She puts it simply, “I would be on the street if it were not for Homes First.”

Homes First tenants are treated with the respect and dignity any of us would hope for from a responsible landlord. Properties are professionally maintained, and tenants take pride in where they live, planting flowers and gardens, keeping things tidy and adding to the property values of their neighborhoods.

As you plan for your own Thanksgiving, consider a gift of gratitude toward Homes First through Give Local 2021. Unless you choose to remain anonymous, your name and donation will be recognized on the online giving platform. You will receive an immediate thank you and tax receipt and know that you are making the holiday brighter for someone.
