Each month, Thurston Community Media (TCMedia)’s Mission Nonprofit connects with local organizations and agencies that positively impact our communities. In February 2024, Mission Nonprofit host Deborah Vinsel and Meagan Murphy Ross, board of directors president of TCMedia, talks about the nonprofit behind Mission Nonprofit.
TCMedia has been serving the greater Thurston County area for over 37 years. Deborah is not only the host of Mission Nonprofit each month, but TCMedia’s CEO as well. Meagan has a journalism background and joined TCMedia because she agreed with their mission, to provide communication resources to build stronger communities.
“When you combine storytelling and information together, in the way we share it in modern days, it’s even better,” says Meagan.
“Media organizations like TCMedia serve a really vital and important role in a community to help a community tell its own story and to make sure that local information is available to the people in a community,” adds Deborah.
TCMedia’s main value is to allow all people the right to express their messages. Over the last 37 years they have had people from all walks of life share their stories via different types of media, including the monthly Mission Nonprofit interviews, which have covered nonprofits from every corner of the county, from pet rescues to voting rights.
Part of TCMedia’s goal is to help people turn their stories into media that can be shared as well as kept for future generations and not lost. Programs like their media production workshops, summer camps and the Young Producers Network all help towards those goals. Once you’ve learned how to use the equipment, you can also rent all types of video equipment – from cameras to lights – and other tools – including iPads with creating software – to create your story. There are studio rooms for rent as well for filming.
