South Puget Sound Community College Foundation Annual Clipper Scramble Golf Tournament Supports Student Success at Exciting New Location

One of SPSCC Foundation’s most exciting signature fundraising events is the annual Clipper Scramble golf tournament. This event helps advance student success and support aspiring student athletes. Each year, sponsors and community donors come together on the golf course to have fun while supporting the Foundation’s commitment to creating equal opportunity for students to continue their education. Through their combined fundraising efforts this long-standing event has helped the Foundation raise over $1 million for emergency grants and scholarships for local students attending South Puget Sound Community College. “The Clipper Scramble has helped us raise significant funding every year to help support student success,” shares Director of Development Christine Hoffmann. “As the foundation that supports SPSCC, we fundraise to support student success and meet emerging needs for the college.”

Annual Clipper Scramble Brings Golf and Community Together at Tumwater Valley Golf Club

For the first time, the Clipper Scramble tournament will be hosted at the Tumwater Valley Golf Club, the home of South Puget Sound Community College’s very first Men’s and Women’s Golf Program formed in fall 2023. SPSCC is eager to highlight the new program and students are excited to participate in Clipper Scramble games and activities on their home turf this year.

SPSCC Head Golf Coach Russ Olsen has worked diligently to form the Clipper Golf Team and sees this as a huge win to support student golfers so they can stay in Thurston County while pursuing their sport at the collegiate level. As the Operations Supervisor for Tumwater Valley Golf Club, he is also thrilled to further the community connections between the City of Tumwater and integral organizations like South Puget Sound Community College. “Our main focus with the golf team was to help students play post-high school golf without having to leave the area,” he shares. “Tumwater Valley Golf Club and Tumwater Parks and Recreation is all about partnership, so we are excited to be a part of building on the athletic teams here.”

Part of the fundraising efforts supports student athletes, who face the challenges of performing at high athletic levels while maintaining academic excellence and balancing finances. “It is hard for athletes to maintain employment because they have rigorous academic schedules on top of busy seasons of practices, exercise, playing games and competing in tournaments,” explains Christine. “At the Clipper Scramble, you get to see our amazing student athletes in action.”
