The Capital High School Cougar girls Volleyball team defeated Olympia High School 15-6 in the fifth set on Thursday, February 18, 2021 in SSC play at Chick Rockey Gymnasium in Olympia.

Capital led two sets to none (25-16, 25-21) but had to battle back after Olympia captured the third and the fourth sets (26-24, 25-20). It was the first time the teams have met in regular league match play since 2014.

For Olympia Head Coach Laurie Creighton and Capital Head Coach Katie Turcotte, there are no thoughts of “enemies” during the coaches first regular season rivalry meeting. Both coaches share a deep friendship and respect that help support and push each program to achieve and excel every day.

The Bears were missing four starters, but for Creighton it was still special to finally be matched up against her friend. “I wish we had our full complement of players but we are happy to be matched up on opposite sides of the net,” Creighton remarked pre-game. “Katie is more than my assistant of nine years, she is my good friend.”

Turcotte wore the Cardinal and Gold for four seasons in the ‘90s, then joined Creighton as an assistant for nine years as a Bear. She was proud of how her girls battled. “It is always fun to play Olympia,” Turcotte noted. “I have an awesome group of seniors and it is just good to be playing volleyball.” 2021 is Turcotte’s fifth year as Capital head coach.
