The boys golf team from Olympia High School (4-0) hosted Bethel High School at Indian Summer Golf Course, in Lacey on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, defeating the Bison in WIAA 4A SPSL (South Puget Sound League) action. Olympia scored a match play – best scores of five of six players – of 189 for the match.

The Bears varsity team had six golfers compete in a day. The match started sunny for the first three holes and then moved into rain and hail for holes five-seven. Carter Fabritius, Silas Guzlas and Brayden Maloney shot 37 to lead the Bears with Cooper Smith scoring a 38. Logan Shaughnessy had a 40 and Cole Johnson shot a 41.

Olympia Bears head coach Skip Fabritius was pleased with his team’s play. “It was a great day for the Bears and especially for Brayden Maloney who had his career-best match,” Fabrititus noted after the match. “The hail storm that covered the greens could have thrown off the team’s concentration, but I felt the team showed their mental toughness and didn’t break stride on the way to their best match of the season.”

Olympia moves toward league play the first week of May and then SPSL Districts the second week of May and hopefully will qualify for the WIAA State Tournament the third week of May hosted at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane. Olympia plays SPSL foes Summer, Bellarmine and Curtis to close the season. “We’ve got our sights set on the top six at state (brings home hardware) and the SPSL may have four teams in the top ten in state, so we hope to continue to play strong as a team as we close our season,” Skip remarked.

Olympia golfer Carter Fabritius was happy with his early play on the day. “I had the best start of the season through four holes and I was feeling pretty good before the blip with the weather,” Carter stated. “It got tough for a couple of holes and I think we all made bad swings, but it was the recovery on the next few that mattered. The team all played really well today and it’s encouraging to see all of the work we put in pay off as we continue to improve this season.”
