Did you know research shows that boxing can improve both your physical and cognitive health? That’s why Penrose & Associates Physical Therapy kicked off this spring’s new boxing classes at the Lacey clinic. Dr. Jennifer Penrose, a physical therapist since 2001 with a doctorate in physical therapy, is excited about the addition of boxing instruction to the clinic’s services supporting lifelong health.
Boxing is a great way to fight against the aging processes in the body and brain. “The sequencing you have to be able to do with punches and footwork is cognitively more demanding,” Penrose says.
Boxing Classes at Penrose & Associates Physical Therapy Boost Mobility, Conditioning, Balance and Cognitive Abilities
Boxing boosts mobility, conditioning, strength, endurance, balance and agility. While boxing fits almost any age group, older populations who develop these skills are better equipped to avoid falls that take away independence and mobility.
Penrose says studies show boxing improves cognitive ability, including for persons with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s diseases. “When you have neuro-degenerative diseases, boxing can help mitigate some of those symptoms,” she says. “You have to process so much information. The brain is plastic, and it can make new connections.”
Experienced Instructor Brings Boxing to Lacey Clinic
Physical Therapy Assistant and boxing instructor JV Estella has taught the fundamentals of boxing to adults and youth, and competed as an amateur boxer. He instructs four participants per class in weekly 40-minute sessions at Penrose Physical Therapy.
Although competitive boxers punch each other, that’s not the case in Estella’s classes where patients shadow box or hit an inflatable punching bag. Patients progress from simple footwork to more complicated arm and foot movements, challenging the body and the mind.
Penrose says that boxing can also reduce the boredom that may come with repetitive physical therapy exercises. She says one patient’s eyes lit up when offered to include boxing in his treatment regimen. “He was so thrilled,” she says.
