Every June, fathers in our community are showered with gifts to give thanks for all they do for their families. From striped ties to World’s Best Dad coffee mugs, families give gratitude to the dads in their lives. While those trinkets show our appreciation, perhaps there is a better option. Consider treating dad to a Father’s Day experience on the Hood Canal.

Discover the incredible shoreline of the canal by boat, or paddle the picturesque waterway via kayak to explore local wildlife up close and personal with Blue Horizons Paddle Sports. They offer adventures on the canal and at nearby Lake Cushman.

If dad has a need for speed, check out Narwhal Boats. The boats available here were specifically selected to cruise the canal. Small aluminum boats are available to get to hard-to-reach oyster beaches while the other boats available are the perfect size to break through the sometimes wavy conditions of the waterway. Grab your fishing license and pole to make it an experience to remember with dad on his special day.

Add a hike to your Father’s Day agenda. Dad will appreciate the many family-friendly opportunities in the Olympic National Forest. One of the must-hike trails of this area is the Mount Ellinor Trail. It boasts one of the most spectacular views in the area. There are two trailheads to choose from, the lower trailhead is an easier climb, but the challenge with the biggest payoff is the upper trailhead. Nearby Dosewallips State Park has a few hiking options including the Steam Donkey Trail. This 3.5-mile trail follows the river through the forest and includes a variety of wildlife to discover along the way.

This year, instead of buying dad a new set of clubs or personalized tees, set him up with a day pass to one of the canal’s pristine golf courses. Alderbrook Golf & Yacht Club is ranked as one of the top 25 courses in our state. Its full-service amenities, Olympic Mountain views, and overall playability satisfies any avid player. Be sure to relax after the round at the Clubhouse Restaurant where there are frequent specials and live music. Just up the 101 visitors can play at Lake Cushman Golf Course. This course is intended to challenge all levels of golfers in a wooded setting. While compact enough to walk, carts are available for dads that want to take a break between swings.

Two major events will also be going on near the canal during Father’s Day weekend. Friday and Saturday celebrate South Sound Traditional Inuit Kayaking Symposium 2019 (SSTIKS) at the beautiful Twanoh State Park. Paddlers can enjoy Greenlandic culture through professionally instructed classes and dazzling displays.

Finally, the Blues & Brews Festival will be a treat for any dad this year. During this second annual event, blues music and local breweries are take center stage in nearby Shelton. Entry is $5 and is only open to those over the age of 21.

After all of those activities, dad is going to need some food and drinks! Start with a trip down the Hood Canal Spirits Trail. Dad can sample a variety of locally made beers, one-of-a-kind wine, and distilled spirits that are made right on the shore of the canal. Find a great camping spot or enjoy the day at the many serene parks to enjoy a family cookout. Locally farmed oysters, clams, shrimp, and crab are bountiful in the area and ready to cap off Father’s Day with full bellies.

Give your dad an experience on the canal that not only shows your adoration but brings the family closer together on fjord of the Hood Canal.
