The importance of adult role models for youth cannot be overstated. Studies show role models outside of parents increase the chance of better achievement in school while decreasing the chance of behaviors like substance abuse. Since 1984 the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Washington has provided our local youth with adult mentors. Join them in celebrating 40 years!
“Over the past four decades, we’ve been privileged to witness multiple generations of young people in our community reach their potential through these transformative relationships,” shares Kayla Brinckmeyer, a former Little and current development and marketing manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Washington. “This milestone is a celebration of the profound impact mentors have had on the lives of countless youth, as well as a tribute to the donors, sponsors, staff, board members, volunteers, and families who have made this work possible. As we reflect on our 40 years in the community, we are filled with gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose. We hope to reignite the passion of our alumni, inspiring them to reengage and help us continue this critical work. Together, we aim to build excitement and urgency, encouraging the community to keep showing up for our youth.”
40 Years of Helping with Youth Mentoring
You can look at their numbers, such as 89% of their Littles (youth) reporting they feel close to their Bigs (adult mentors), 91% saying that relationship is crucial to them, 87% saying their Bigs help them cope with challenges, with 90% of them on track to graduate high school and 98% feeling confident in school, but as Kayla says, the words of the Littles are much more powerful.
“The best thing about having a Big is that I’ve experienced so much and learned how to cope better,” shares Lola, a Little who enrolled at 11 and is now 16.
“The best thing about having a Big is having another outlet, support system, and best friend – someone to talk to when you don’t have anyone else,” shares former Little Hailee.
As a former Little herself, Kayla knows this firsthand. “That experience had a huge impact on me, even in the decisions I make today,” she shares. “Coming from a background where my immigrant mother worked tirelessly to provide for us, being part of Big Brothers Big Sisters gave me the support and opportunities I needed to dream bigger. My Big Sisters played crucial roles during pivotal moments in my life, offering guidance, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. They helped me see beyond my circumstances, and their influence is a big part of why I’m committed to giving back to my community today.”
Kayla remembers her first airplane trip, to Seattle, was made possible by her Big. “I remember loving it so much that I declared, ‘One day, I’m going to live here!’ Well, fast forward 20 years, and guess who’s now a proud Washingtonian?” Kayla adds.

Male Mentors Needed for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Washington
Want to get involved? Big Brothers Big Sisters needs 94 male volunteers to be Bigs to fill their list of Littles waiting for a match! Mentors spend between 4 and 6 hours a month with their Littles, with a minimum commitment of 12 months.
“Male role models are crucial because they provide guidance and support that is uniquely impactful for boys,” shares Kayla. “Many of the youth we serve lack positive male figures in their lives, and having a male mentor can help address this gap by offering stability, encouragement, and a positive example. Male mentors can also help build confidence, teach important life skills, and offer a different perspective, all of which contribute to the personal and academic success of the boys we serve. Most importantly, boys are asking for male role models and come to our program with specific requests to have representation! By stepping into this role, male volunteers can make a significant difference and help shape a brighter future for these young individuals.”
Mentors must be over 18 and live in Thurston, Mason, Lewis, Grays Harbor or Pacific County, and pass a criminal background check. For more information, contact Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Washington via the website today!
“Being a Big is incredibly rewarding because it provides a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on a young person’s life,” shares Kayla. “The joy of seeing a Little grow, achieve their goals, and build confidence is unmatched.” You will be surprised at how much you get out of volunteering. It really is life-changing for both Big and Little.
