In some way, Richard Lamour was like any kid growing up in New York. He played football and went to school. Richard had two siblings, a brother and a sister, and developed a strong interest in science. Unlike most high school football players, however, Richard spent his summers volunteering in the genetics lab at Columbia University and hanging out with geneticists. His mother was a lab technician in the building so she was comfortable with the arrangement and Richard took full advantage of the arrangement.

After graduation from high school, Richard went on to play four years of college football at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. The rigors of being a college athlete did not impact his commitment to academics and he graduated with a degree in natural sciences. When he attended The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, he received his letter of recommendation from the physicians back in the genetics lab at Columbia. Now Richard was Dr. Lamour and continued his education by completing a residency at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital in South Florida.

His educational tour did not end on the east coast. Dr. Lamour went on the complete advanced fellowship training in orthopaedic sports medicine at the Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze Florida. Here Dr. Lamour trained with one of nation’s leading orthopaedic surgeons, Dr. James Andrew, one of the founding members of the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center. Dr. Andrew is also the co-founder of the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI), a non-profit institute dedicated to injury prevention, education and research. Dr. Lamour completed an additional fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at the Las Vegas Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Institute in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While in Las Vegas, Dr. Lamour met his future wife Erin, a pediatric dentist from Portland, Oregon. It was her desire to return to her roots in the Pacific Northwest that drew the Lamours to the Olympia area. “I have lived in almost every region in the country,” explains Dr. Lamour. “I love the easy-going nature of people in the area and the small town feel with big city amenities.” He loves the fishing, crabbing and boating that our area has to offer, but what really drew him to Olympia was the quality of care offered at Olympia Orthopaedic Associates.

“I immediately saw that the physicians at OOA are very passionate about delivering exceptional care to patients,” shares Dr. Lamour. “The practice makes it easy for the practitioners to provide that care, which really attracted me to the group.”

Dr. Lamour’s extensive training will allow him to provide high-level care in both the Foot and Ankle Clinic and the Sports Medicine Clinic. He will be seeing patients in the Olympia Orthopaedic Associates Eastside clinic.

“I love the broad range of patients that I get to treat in the foot and ankle clinic,” says Lamour. “I enjoy patients of all ages and helping patients with issues from arthritis to trauma.” Dr. Lamour gained extensive knowledge and experience treating athletes during his training years to University of Miami football, Miami Marlins baseball, Auburn University football and Fresno State basketball teams.

While in medical school, Dr. Lamour volunteered in several low-income clinics in Columbus, Ohio providing care to the homeless and needy. He was attracted the commitment that Olympia Orthopaedic Associates has made to the disadvantages members of the local community. Dr. Lamour also helped lead an intensive summer program for high school students interested in medicine, called MD Camp. Perhaps working with these students prepared him for the future teen years with his newborn son, August.

Dr. Lamour and his wife Erin look forward to getting to know the community. They spend as much time as possible outdoors hiking and enjoying the water. The Lamours recently enjoyed crabbing on the Oregon coast at Cape Meares. After taking some time off to enjoy his new family and settle into our community, Dr. Lamour is eager to begin seeing patients at the OOA Eastside Clinic.
