Stand up paddling is becoming one of the biggest outdoor sports in the NW and South Puget Sound is a standup paddlers mecca. With miles of flatwater cruising and endless coves and inlets to explore the SUP paddler will never get tired of the scenery. Public water access is available in many key paddler locations. Some of the routes discussed in this article will be detailed further in future articles.

Among the paddling routes are:

  • Nisqually Nature Center to Anderson Island

  • Fry Cove to Green Cove

  • Boston Harbor to Henderson Inlet

  • Boston Harbor to Fish Trap

  • Boston Harbor to Olympia

  • Olympia to Boston Harbor

  • Lake St. Claire

  • Summit Lake

  • Long Lake

  • West Bay Park (Rotary Park) to Priest Point Park

  • Boston Harbor to Hope Island

  • Swantown Marina to Percival Landing

This is just a basic list of routes available in the South Sound area.  Over the next few months we will be documenting and writing up more detailed descriptions of each route.

SUP is an all season sport in the South Sound area. It is important to prepare for a safe adventure during each season. It is mandatory to wear a leash and have a PFD on board whenever you go out.

During winter a drysuit or wetsuit may be a good idea, this often depends on the stability of the board as well as the weather conditions. Neoprene booties and gloves will keep you toasty during those chilly paddles.

A Camelback is a great way to stay hydrated while paddling. Also a waterproof camera is a must, you never know when that seal will pop up or the Olympics will show their full glory.
