This six-week workshop will focus on events in the life of a poem: phases the poem passes through as it is conceived and created, revised and edited, shared or published. Our sessions will focus on these events:
– the poem’s emergence from out of other writing
– the poem’s companion poems (the series or cycle)
– the poem arrayed on a page
– the poem accompanied by prose on a page

Writing prompts will be sent out between meetings, so that throughout the six weeks, we will be composing our own poems, taking each phase in the life of our poems into account. Brief talks, along with readings and discussions of relevant samples of a wide variety of poems, will allow us to study each event separately. Other sessions will include time for practice reading poetry out loud and feedback on drafts. Participants can expect to explore familiar and new formal elements in poetry, improve their editing and revising skills, and finish with a new short manuscript of poems, all in an energetic, encouraging environment.
