In January 2023, the Olympia City Council – in partnership and solidarity with the South Sound YMCA – proclaimed the day after MLK Day as the Day of Racial Healing. With this proclamation, we join communities across the country in the National Day of Racial Healing. This is a special day to acknowledge the values we share, build trust in each other, form genuine connections and inspire collective action that furthers #HowWeHeal from the effects of racism.

In honor and celebration of this observance, there will be two events hosted by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in partnership with NBCNews and Telemundo:

The NBC News NOW special event from Los Angeles, California will debut at 9 p.m. EST / 6 p.m. PST on Friday, January 12.

Spanish language special from Los Angeles will debut at 7 p.m. EST / 4 p.m. PST on Saturday, January 13 on Telemundo’s website, YouTube, Facebook , and Twitter/X and will be broadcasted on Telemundo on Saturday, January 20 at 5 p.m. EST / 2 p.m. PST.

“As a community, we must acknowledge and repair the damage caused by racism – both the historic trauma and the harms that continue today. The process of healing will move our community forward in ways that affirm the value of all people.” – Kyle Cronk, President & CEO, South Sound YMCA

The annual observance of the “National Day of Racial Healing” was created with and builds on the work and learnings of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) community partners. TRHT was established in 2017 to promote racial healing as a critical path for ending racial bias and creating a society in which all children can thrive. The National Day of Racial Healing is held each year on the Tuesday following Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
