The Evergreen State College is celebrating the 794 Greeners who are the class of 2021 all this week beginning with small group and program graduations and ending with virtual commencement ceremonies for the Olympia and Tacoma campuses June 11 and 12.

The theme for Evergreen’s class of 2021 is the Maya Angelou quote: “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. It may be necessary to encounter defeat so you can know who you are, and what you can rise from.”

“This is a fitting quote for a group of individuals who had to adapt quickly from in-person classes to a virtual world, along with finding a new normal in the midst of a worldwide pandemic,” said Evergreen President George Bridges.

“These graduates have demonstrated resilience and creativity in pursuit of their degrees, and they are ready to excel in whatever they choose.”

Evergreen’s Olympia virtual commencement is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, June 11. This year’s commencement features award-winning singer-songwriter and voice-talent commencement speaker, Tay Zonday, Evergreen Class of ‘04; student emcee Dante Faulk ’22; undergraduate student speaker Hailey Salzar ’20; graduate student speaker Benjamin Feldbush, double alum, class of ’19 and ‘22; and faculty speakers Ruth Hayes and Laurie Meeker.

Evergreen’s Tacoma Campus will virtually celebrate its graduates from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 12. During this ceremony, the 39 undergraduate and 16 graduate degree-recipients will be honored. This will be the first year that the Evergreen Tacoma has graduates from its Master of Public Administration program.
