Volunteers from Fools Play Improv are donating their time and experience to teaching Capital High School (CHS) drama students the art of Improv. If the project is successful, Fools Play may offer these workshops regularly to the wider South South student body.

Two active members of the improv comedy troupe, Fools Play Improv, began at CHS in 2007 inspired by Fools Play Improv. They first formed their own high school troupe, “Covered in Bees” and later joined Fools Play. Now CHS students are again reviving the idea of a school improv club and Fools Play is helping to show them the ropes.

Saturday, November 30, 4:00-6:00pm, an expected group of about 20 CHS students, accompanied by the CHS Drama teacher, Kristina Cummins, will participate in a free pilot workshop class with Fools Play at the Olympia Family Theater. Improv comedy requires a set of mental, emotional, and physical skills that allow for the control of on-the-fly humorous stories to unfold on stage. However, Fools Play doesn’t just want to teach these students how to be Fools Play, the goal of this workshop is to help initiate a dialogue between students as to the direction and focus of their own troupe.

The students are also invited to watch a discounted Fools Play performance at 8pm. It just so happens to be a special format that only occurs when an apprentice is being offered the title of Fool and their iconic colored shirt. In this way, the students will get to see the process of becoming an improviser from the starting and finished performer.

While Fools Play stands to some lose revenue by offering these workshops for free, we wanted to get as much reach as possible, and with help from Olympia Family Theater on rates, and with years of support from our loyal fans, members of Fools Play felt this was a great way to give back.
