ballet northwestWashington’s longest-running ballet company is presenting the Young Choreographers Showcase at Olympia High School on August 25, 2013. The show features dances created by local dancers, with special guest performances by musicians from Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia (SOGO).

Ballet Northwest Co-Artistic Director Josie Johnson said “We’re proud of the work these local dancers have created.  The quality is fantastic, and the pieces are very diverse, with styles including ballet, contemporary, and jazz.”

This one-of-a-kind presentation was conceived in 2012 by Ballet Northwest Co-Artistic Directors Ken and Josie Johnson. They saw company dancers studying a broad range of dance styles and experimenting with creating their own choreography. The Johnsons saw that the Olympia area needed a place for young artists to perform works conceived, crafted and directed by their peers.

“Last year, we were so thrilled with the success of the program we performed a few of the pieces at other community events throughout the year, giving the dancers and choreographers some wonderful experience. We have even more pieces this year, with some new choreographers as well as returning choreographers who have benefited from their previous experiences.” Ballet Northwest Co-Artistic Director Ken Johnson stated.

The Young Choreographers Showcase performs at the Olympia High School Performing Arts Center on Sunday August 25, 2013. Curtain time is 7 pm and tickets will be available at the door for $10. Pre-sale tickets can also be purchased at Johansen Olympia Dance Center during open hours. Visit www.balletnorthwest.org for more information.
