Today, the City of Olympia learned that the Family Support Center received a State of Washington Housing Trust Fund award in the amount of $750,000. The announced funding helps move the Center forward in their goal to provide services for families with children. With 6 new emergency units downstairs (28-beds) and 7 permanent housing units upstairs (34-beds) this facility will fill a vital gap in the community.

City of Olympia Mayor Stephen Buxbaum relays, “In October, the Olympia School District reported 412 homeless students. Preliminary counts this month indicate homelessness has doubled since last year. It is hard for children to focus on education when they are wondering where they will sleep, let alone have resources to do their homework. The Family Support Center will provide a much needed option for homeless families with children.”

The Family Housing will be located at 837, 7th Avenue SE, Olympia. The building is being renovated thanks to the State Housing Trust Fund’s $750,000 and a $551,000 Community Development Block Grant fund, awarded by the Olympia City Council on July 10, 2012. Steve Friddle relays, “the Center has a long and respected history of providing high quality services and programs to help families become strong, healthy and self-sufficient.”

The Family Support Center hopes to open the doors to homeless families with children in November 2013.
