Martin Kimeldorf teaches hands-on class in image-making at Olympia Library November 7

Learn to create more interesting images for your Facebook page or scrapbook. Martin Kimeldorf, local photographer and photo artist, is offering a hands-on seminar on how to make pictures, not just take the same old tired photos. The class is free of charge and takes place after hours at the Olympia Timberland Library on Wednesday, November 7 from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m.

The seminar is designed for all level of camera users and posers. It will be helpful to bring a simple picture-taking device. No fancy equipment will be needed. Here’s an outline of the seminar topics and activities:

  • Why we make rather than take an image. How to take creative control of the images you make.
  • How to direct a subject, or, on the other side of the camera, how to strike a unique pose.

Examples of directing a subject, using handouts and a local model, will be presented. People will look through a cardboard viewfinder to get used to framing up an image and seeing like a camera.

  • Practice Making, Directing, Seeing

Participants will break into random pairs of photographer and subject. Using posing cues sheets, they will practice with each other.

  • Practice Shooting in a New Way

Participants will work creatively with spaces, places and props. Rule: You can only shoot each other. Respect other patrons’ privacy.

  • Debrief and share.
