Olympia foot and ankleYour big toe is the hardest-working toe.  Every time your foot pushes off the ground, this toe supports much of your body’s weight.  Any problem with the big toe can make walking or even standing painful.  A bunion is a bony prominence on the inside portion of your foot.  It is one  of the most common big toe problems.  Not only can a bunion be painful, it can change the shape of your foot, making it harder to find shoes that fit.

The good news is that bunions can be treated.  With help from the Board Certified Physicians at Foot and Ankle Surgical Associates,  your feet can look and feel better.

Although bunions may develop on the little toe (bunionette), bunions usually occur at the base of the big toe.  Bunions are often due to incorrect foot mechanics.  In some cases, joint damage, arthritis or  an injury can cause a bunion.

There are several types of bunions.  A positional bunion (mild) is a result of growth of new bone.  A structural bunion (severe) is a result when the joint at the base of the toe shifts position.  Many bunions are a combination of both types.

To determine the best treatment for your condition, the doctor will ask various questions regarding if and when you have pain.  He may also test your joint movements.  He may watch you walk to see if there are incorrect foot mechanics to see if your feet rotate or flatten.

Radiographs, or x-rays may be taken at your initial visit to correctly evaluate your foot.

If a bunion is not painful or severe, the doctor may recommend that you wear a different style of shoe.  Custom-made foot orthotics can control incorrect foot mechanics and prevent further joint damage.  For severe or painful bunions, outpatient surgery may be recommended.
