The SUP downwinder is one of the best things about being on the water paddleboarding. You are riding the waves with the wind at your back, it is almost effortless. The South Puget Sound Stand Up Paddlers and West Bay Paddleboards often schedule Budd Bay downwinders.
In Budd Bay, there are 2 routes depending on wind and current directions

  • West Bay Marina to Boston Harbor
  • it is good to wait for the outgoing tide and SSW winds

or

  • Boston Harbor to West Bay Marina
  •  look for incoming tide and NNE winds

Depending on the conditions, the paddler should allow at least 2 hours for this 6 mile trip.

Logistics also have to be considered, i.e., cars at both start and end location. Free parking is available at both locations.

Always wear your leash and have a PFD on board. Bring water and snacks and enjoy the ride. A nice side trip would be Gull Harbor on a high tide.

Standup paddleboards are available to rent or buy from West Bay Paddleboards.
