Tuesday, April 14 is National Library Workers Day. It falls within the annual celebration of National Library Week, sponsored by the American Library Association.  Take time to visit the library in your area and say “thank you” for all that our library workers do for us.

The week-long observance is a time to reflect on what free, public libraries mean to people all over the country, but National Library Workers Day is much more personal. It’s about the people in your library, and in the library where you went as a kid; it’s about the librarian who taught your child the ABC song, and who helped your grandfather learn about his ancestors. Library professionals work in libraries because they love libraries, and they love sharing that passion with others.

Here are a few things to reflect on this year:

  • Libraries across America report a surge in visits by job seekers who find expert help and a wealth of resources – jobs databases, skills-building programs, and access to free computers, internet and printing.
  • Parents bring their babies, toddlers and preschoolers to libraries for early childhood development programs, resources and support.
  • Teens find spaces to gather and programs to engage their interests. Youth Services librarians help teens create their own communities around ideas, creativity, and a sense of belonging and purpose.
  • People of all ages expand their knowledge and enrich their lives through the vast resources of public libraries.
