Dr. Niva will discuss his recent research into expanding American-led operations against ISIS in Iraq and Syria since “Operation Inherent Resolve” was launched against ISIS in August 2014. Although the US is not officially engaged in ground combat operations, he will describe how U.S. troops are playing a more active role on the ground in both Iraq and Syria via the expanding use of Special Operations Forces and assisting local forces for impending ground invasions of major ISIS-held cities like Mosul and Raqqa. He will map the conflict across the Iraq-Syria battlespace and assess the current debate over political and military strategy against ISIS.
