The Olympia Historical Society & Bigelow House Museum and South Puget Sound Community College are co-sponsoring the showing of the documentary film “Labor Wars of the Northwest,” on May 1, at 7 p.m. on the campus of South Puget Sound Community College in the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center, 2011 Mottman Rd., Olympia.
Tickets, available for purchase at the door, are priced at $7 for the public, $5 for OHS & BHM members and free for South Puget Sound Community College students with identification. Admission cost does not include a $3.00 service fee assessed by the Minnaert Center. Following the film, there will be a discussion on labor history. Net proceeds will benefit the work of the Olympia Historical Society & Bigelow House Museum.
“Labor Wars of the Northwest,” examines labor conflict in the context of a decades-long struggle that began with the arrival of the railroads in the 1880s and permeated the region, including Olympia and Thurston County. It shines new light on tragedies like the 1919 Seattle General Strike and the 1919 Centralia Massacre. The documentary was created in part to commemorate the centennial year of those monumental events in Washington State history.
“Labor Wars” was written and directed by the historian and author David J. Jepsen, who teaches Pacific Northwest History at SPSCC and Tacoma Community College.
