Capitol Land Trust’s Summer Social @ Albee’s Garden Parties
Jul 27 @ 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Capitol Land Trust’s Summer Social @ Albee’s Garden Parties

Join us in a social event to continue celebrating Capitol Land Trust’s 100 land conservation successes!

On a summer afternoon, you’ll stroll Albee’s gardens, sip on a glass of wine or beer, and eat hors d’oeuvres, while catching up with old (and new!) friends. You will also be able to connect with board members and chat with staff.

We’ll gather on the lawn later in the afternoon, to hear from Executive Director Dave Winter who will lead us in celebrating recent successes and share plans for the future and current program updates. A request for donations will be made—all donations will support our mission to conserve, care for, and share the lands we all love.

At Capitol Land Trust we strategically conserve vital natural areas within the south Puget Sound watersheds and Chehalis Basin. We prioritize properties with estuaries, marine shorelines, wetlands, rivers and riparian areas and associated forests because of the crucial role they play in supporting the health and vitality of wildlife habitats as well as our communities.

We Are Also in Bondage Here: Black Women in the Washington Civil Rights Movement @ Olympia Timberland Library

The Olympia Timberland Library and the League of Women Voters of Thurston County are thrilled to welcome Quin’Nita Cobbins-Modica to the library for this special Humanities Washington presentation. The dominant narrative about Washington State is that it’s an “exceptional” place rather than a microcosm of the larger U.S. society. How do Black women’s stories challenge this understanding? What are the long-standing systemic inequalities in the state? When the 1960s ushered in a wave of political ferment in Washington State, Black women were the driving force behind civil rights campaigns to dismantle statewide racial segregation and discriminatory practices. This talk examines their collective leadership efforts and activist work, which resulted in significant legislative changes and profoundly impacted the state’s residents. By centering Black women’s experiences and sacrifices, we can learn valuable lessons about the past and its relevance to ongoing contemporary social and political issues.
