For the first concert in 2020 the Olympia Symphony returns to the “Roaring 20s” with jazz-inspired, Broadway-blockbuster works by George Gershwin: An American in Paris (complete with honking taxi horns!) and the beloved Rhapsody in Blue — with the energetic Portland pianist Sophie Lippert as soloist. “The Chairman Dances” is a Foxtrot for Orchestra, taken from John Adams’ sensational opera Nixon in China. And in honor of Black History Month, the OSO will present the rarely-performed Ballade by English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, who found his biggest fame in the USA.
