Ramblin’ Boy: The Letters of Steve Hoyt is nominally the story of Steve Hoyt, a sensitive and adventurous young man who died on Lummi Island in a diving accident in 1972, but it is much more. Based chronologically on letters saved for nearly 50 years interspersed with the memories of two close friends, the numerous anecdotes and photos in this memoir illustrate the changes America went through during the 1960s. The personal memories, dreams and reflections of three young men coming of age bring to life this pivotal period, with the Seattle area and western Washington the setting for much of the story.
About the author
Born in Seattle in 1947, Daniel Leen has lived and worked on the west coast for most of his adult life, spending time as an itinerant hobo, working as a field archaeologist, and for the past thirty years working at Pike Place Market in Seattle, selling northwest coast art work based on prehistoric petroglyphs and more modern Northwest Coast art. In his youth, after spending a few years in Alaska building a log cabin with hand tools he moved to British Columbia and built a 32’ sailboat which he then used to explore the British Columbia coast for a number of years, documenting prehistoric pictographs and petroglyphs. Daniel has published scientific papers and monographs on prehistoric rock art as well as a previous book Hoboing in the 1980s about his hobo experiences. His writing and photographs have also been published in Co-Evolution Quarterly, Sunset Magazine, and numerous books on North American rock art and at present, he is working on The Mystery of Lisnacloon, a novel set in Ireland based on an old family story of robbery, murder and betrayal.
