Residents Easily Find Impactful Volunteer Opportunities Near Harbor Heights

Harbor Heights resident Kathie Deviny was greatly looking forward to retirement so she could finally have more time to give back to the causes she cared deeply for. Being born and raised in Olympia, it has been a gift to return to her hometown after living most of her adult life in King County. She moved back about three years ago with her husband, and they have both found that living at Harbor Heights has given them so much more time, energy, and freedom to invest in the things they really enjoy. “It has been the perfect situation for us at this time in our lives,” she says. “Before we owned houses, but we didn’t want that kind of responsibility anymore, so now our world has opened up.”

As soon as they moved back to Olympia, Kathie began searching for places she could volunteer. Kathie has been volunteering since she retired, and was eager to continue to give back now that she had come back to the community she loved. After exploring all of the various nonprofit organizations in the local vicinity, Kathie chose to devote her time to Seattle Children’s Hospital Bargain Boutique, which is a thrift store on the west side of Olympia. As the primary children’s hospital in the area, their impact is far-reaching with regional clinics all over that provide free uncompensated care for any child who needs services.

For Kathie, it was nostalgic for her to volunteer for Seattle Children’s Hospital because her mother had done the same when Kathie was growing up. “My mother lived in Olympia for most of her life and was involved in the Seattle Children’s Hospital Guild,” she recalls. “When I was a little girl, she would attend orthopedic meetings and they would do fundraising.” There was already a fondness in her heart for the mission and efforts of Seattle Children’s Hospital after seeing her mother’s devotion to the cause, so this was a driving factor for Kathie in supporting their Bargain Boutique as a volunteer. With Harbor Heights so close to the thrift shop, it was an easy choice that has brought much joy to her heart.

Giving Back Through Harbor Heights’ Olympia Apartments

Harbor Heights is very supportive of their residents’ needs and interests, and the staff are always eager to find new ways to bring the community closer together. Through Kathie’s volunteerism with the Bargain Boutique, she founded the donation counter within Harbor Heights to create a space for recycling and donation. “People here love to share things, so if they have something they don’t use anymore, they can bring them to this counter and leave them there for someone else to use,” explains Kathie. “If it isn’t gone within 24 hours, then I take it to the Bargain Boutique with me and donate it there.” Being able to partner with Harbor Heights on this effort has given Kathie space to contribute to the community while helping others make good use of their unwanted items.

Kathie has been delighted at the tight-knit, neighborly atmosphere within Harbor Heights. The culture has been established through Harbor Heights’ commitment to community, and is successfully maintained through each and every resident’s passion for helping others. “The people at Harbor Heights are very sharing people, so even if they don’t volunteer somewhere specifically, they still love to help each other out,” Kathie says. “This place is more unusual – the way that people will go out of their way for each other – whether it’s picking up a package or helping someone move in a crisis. It is very organic, but I really have to credit the management in fostering this sense of community.”

Harbor Heights cares deeply about joy, connection, and community for their residents, and promotes both internal events and resident-led activities to create more opportunities for friendships to grow. Whether it’s sponsoring a poker tournament in the game room or putting together a paint and sip class onsite, Harbor Heights seeks to give back based on what is important to the residents. Thanks to their numerous amenities including a craft room, fitness center, and breathtaking outdoor terrace, this 55+ community has plenty to offer to support every resident in discovering a full and happy community with others.
