New Bus Driving Career at Intercity Transit

Applying for most jobs can feel like a never-ending slog. Your application disappears into an internet void where you may or may not ever hear back. Intercity Transit’s hiring event has zero mystery involved.

Intercity Transit Recruiter Amy Zurfluh breaks down how the day will run.

Interested applicants can choose either the 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. or 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. session at 1570 Irving Street SW in Tumwater. Advance registration is encouraged but not mandatory. There is no age limit to apply as a coach operator, but you must have had your driver’s license for at least five years.

Zurfluh explains that the first eight weeks of employment will be paid training. You’ll learn how to drive a bus, obtain your CDL through Intercity Transit’s in-house training program, and study their 21 well-traveled routes. HR staff will be at the recruitment event helping applicants with the online recruitment system, application process and performing in-person interviews.

Plenty of Perks as an Intercity Transit Bus Driver

Awarded positions guarantee 40 hours a week of work starting from day one. They also come with outstanding benefits, including medical, dental, vacation, retirement and pension plans. While at the hiring event, applicants can even get behind the wheel of a bus or Dial-A-Lift van.

Later in the afternoon, Intercity Transit staff will be facilitating the customer service test portion of the application process. This takes place at 2:30 p.m. and applicants aren’t required to stay and finish it that day, Intercity Transit will gladly reschedule for a later date if needed. But, says Zurfluh, “by knocking all these requirements out on the day of the event, it will significantly shorten the typical hiring process. They could receive a conditional offer of employment a week later and the start date will be early April.”

Intercity Transit Coach Operators start at $23.43 an hour with annual step raises up to $33.20 an hour or $69,056 a year. The organization is even finishing work on a brand-new building that includes a driver lounge with relaxation room, computer access and an on-site gym with showers.
