As freezing temperatures quickly approach and Daylight Saving Time comes to an end Sunday, November 6, Puget Sound Energy (PSE) is providing tips for customers to keep costs down during the colder, darker months.

  • Get smart with the thermostat.

Heating can account for up to 60% of monthly energy costs. You can save as much as 10% a year on heating by simply turning your thermostat back 7 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit for 8 hours a day from its normal setting. Install and properly set a smart thermostat to make this happen automatically.

  • Replace old insulation.

Insulation is like a blanket for your home. The heavier the blanket, the warmer your home will be in the winter. Even adding insulation to a newer home can pay for itself within a few years. Proper weatherization can save more than $200 a year in reduced heating and cooling costs. Fill, patch or caulk holes around windows and on floors and ceilings connected to unheated spaces. Now through December 31, PSE has increased all rebates on insulation, air sealing and duct sealing projects to help decrease the cost of upgrading. • Update outdoor lighting with LEDs.

Now is the time to check all outdoor lighting as extreme temperatures can shorten the life of bulbs. Where you can, replace your outdoor lighting with LED fixtures, which use 6 times less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. Now through the end of the year, PSE has increased rebates on outdoor LED fixtures. Shop today at the PSE website.

  • Space heat rebates:

Replacing an inefficient heating system can save you money on energy bills and also improve the comfort of your home. Use PSE’s wide variety of heating rebates to make the purchase of an energy-efficient electric or natural gas heating system easier on your wallet. Learn more at the PSE website.
