On Wednesday, July 1, the South Sound YMCA opened its doors to members after more than 100 days of facility and program closures. During the state’s Stay Home Stay Healthy order and through phases one and two of the Governor’s Safe Start reopening plan, the Y quickly pivoted services to meet the unique and rapidly changing needs of our community.

They provided free emergency care for first responders and healthcare workers, addressed increasing feelings of isolation and loneliness with compassion calls to seniors, and encouraged physical wellness with a suite of online classes free to the entire community.

Now in phase three, the Y is transitioning again to meet ever-changing community needs. As they implement appropriate mitigation protocols to prevent the spread of airborne illness in their facilities, they are utilizing their resources to serve the community in new and necessary ways.

On June 22, the Y opened its Plum Street location to provide showers to our unhoused population. In partnership with the City of Olympia, this service includes transportation to the Y and critical hygiene items.

The Y also worked with Thurston County to obtain and distribute 20,000 face masks in the community. The Y has distributed masks to schools, childcare sites and individuals and has additional masks available. For information, or to procure masks, please contact the Briggs YMCA.
