Many people in our community are pre-diabetic and don’t even know it, nor do they realize how close they are to developing Type 2 Diabetes. Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics’ Diabetes Wellness Center invites anyone with a recent diagnosis of pre-diabetes, or who has scored positive in a pre-diabetes self-test, to attend a free, one-hour Pre-Diabetes Orientation Class to introduce them to its year-long Diabetes Prevention Program. The Orientation Class will be offered on two dates in May; the first will be an evening class on Tuesday, May 14 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and the second class will be during the day on Thursday, May 30 from 1 to 2 p.m.  Both classes will be held in the Pershing Meeting Room at Mason General Hospital.

Pre-diabetes is a higher than normal blood sugar level that warns you are at increased risk for heart disease and stroke, and that without weight loss, moderate activity and a healthy diet, you may be at serious risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.  MGH&FC’s Diabetes Wellness Center offers a twelve-month Diabetes Prevention Program to guide people through a lifestyle change that can prevent Type 2 diabetes. The Orientation Class is designed to explain the Program and answer questions prior to having people make a commitment to its year-long program objectives.  The aim is to support participants in making lifestyle changes that include healthy eating, weight loss, stress reduction, and regular physical activity in order to delay or prevent diabetes for the long term.

To see if you might be a candidate for the Diabetes Prevention Program, take the Pre-Diabetes Risk Quiz. If you score positive for pre-diabetes call Diabetes Wellness Center Coordinator Debbie McGinnis, RN, BSN, CDE, at (360) 427-7332 to discuss attending the one-hour pre-diabetes Orientation Class to see if the Diabetes Prevention Program is right for you.

This is an opportunity to take charge of your health and will require a regular commitment of your time and energy.  It’s a lifestyle change for a healthy future, and you are worth it!
