Visitors to the Hands On Children’s Museum can watch the master glassblowers from the Museum of Glass and experiment with their own melted plastic sculptures at nearby tinkering stations August 9-11.
Kids can learn about molten glass, experiment with heat, and create their own melted art such as Shrinky Dink pendants and keychains. Inside the Museum’s MakeSpace, visitors can create more elaborate Maker’s Melt plastic sculptures inspired by traditional glass art.
The Mobile Hot Shop is one of many featured events during Summer Splash!, the summer-long festival of fun offered each year at Hands On. The Festival provides three months of interactive learning experiences, including traveling exhibits, guest artists, and special activities designed to alleviate summer learning loss while children are out of school.
“Maker” activities are a prominent feature of this year’s Festival which features Riveropolis, a 35’ long Play River through August 17, where kids can build bridges and boats at nearby tinkering stations. Additional Festival features include a Mermaid Princess meet and greet on August11, live Reptile Show on Aug. 17, and Solar Days August 18-19. Kids can climb inside a vintage T-28 airplane and build their own flying machine August 22-23. Mud Pie Mondays are a regular summer feature each week.
Summer Splash! activities are free with Children’s Museum admission or membership. EBT cardholders get free admission daily. Hands On also offers free admission to all from 5 to 9 p.m. on the First Friday of each month. For a full schedule of events and activities visit www.hocm.org/summersplashfestival.
