Pianist Wolfgang Wortberg will perform and discuss a variety of musical works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as the next guest in the Saint Martin’s University Music @ 11 recital series. The one-hour presentation, “The Life and Music of W.A. Mozart,” will take place at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21, in Kreielsheimer Hall, on the Saint Martin’s University campus, 5000 Abbey Way SE. The event is free and open to the public.
Wortberg’s performance will include Mozart’s “Six German Dances,” “Sonata in A Minor” and “Fantasy in C Minor.” Mozart, who composed from the age of 5, created more than 600 works of symphonic, operatic, chamber and choral music.
Known for his musical insight, beautiful tone, and technical command, Wortberg has performed in venues across the United States and Europe. His unique concerts focus on presenting verbal and musical portraits of selected composers by interweaving music with insightful reflections of the life and work of the composers and their contemporaries. The pianist’s repertoire includes all the great composers, from Bach to Debussy.
Wortberg was born and raised in Germany and graduated from Hamburg University. He taught at the Brahms Conservatory in Hamburg while performing as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe. Wortberg moved to the United States in 2006. He has performed in solo recitals, with chamber ensembles and as a featured musician with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra. In addition to performing, he has a special interest in helping young people discover the joy of classical music. He is a frequent lecturer at high schools and colleges.
Darrell Born, associate professor of music and chair of the Saint Martin’s University Department of Fine and Performing Arts, created the “Music @ 11” recital series, now in its ninth year, to raise awareness of the musical arts and provide opportunities for students and the community to experience various kinds of music in a recital setting.
