Meet the McCrosky’s

Rebuilding Together TC
Scott and Sharon McCrosky

Scott McCrosky, a 60 year old vet, and his wife Sharon live on a very low-income budget and are both disabled.  The couple is no longer physically or financially capable of performing the necessary repairs their home needs.  Thanks to the volunteer team of Oly 5-Star, we were able to complete a long checklist of repairs for Scott and Sharon in September.

Rebuild Day

First on the list for the McCrosky’s was replacing the old roof that was leaking and causing stains in the interior of their home.  John Ritchie of JR Roofing, and his team tore off the damaged roof and replaced it with a 30-year composition roof.  As you can see, they did a beautiful job.

Next on the list was the ramp at the entry of their home.  The angle in which it was constructed was so steep that Sharon’s wheelchair struggled to make it up to the front door.  Dave Phillips of LeMier Phillips Construction came to the rescue by lifting and extending the existing ramp. Along with the help of Erik Barrett of RSVP Olympia, they even went the extra mile by adding a solid transition landing area at the base of it.  Great job Dave and Erik!!

Another issue the McCrosky’s faced was rotting wood from several leaks in and outside of the home.  These leaks would soon lead to termites if not taken care of.  Ron Springer of Springer Plumbing found and repaired leaks inside the bathroom and under their home.

John Ketola of Ketola/Targus Painting also helped with the rotting wood issue by replacing, caulking, and repainting the failing trim on the side of their home.  Thank you Ron and John.

Rick Longnecker of Buds and Blades also participated in the project.  Rick buried the sprinkler system, trimmed the yard and bushes and beautified the landscaping.  Sharon was just tickled.

Jim Simmons of Mr. Electric replaced and upgraded all of the fire detectors in the home with new ones that they won’t have to worry about maintaining for years and years to come.  He also gave their furnace a safety check.

Finally, the remaining volunteers provided additional services as needed.   Diane Springer, Jackie Ashley, and Raechel Kilcup of RTTC along with Dar Davis of Hung Right Doors washed exterior windows, cleaned up as the crew was working, pulled nails out of boards for reuse, and assisted the team where needed.  These ladies were even caught with power tools in their hands!  Diane Gassman, Jackie Ashley, Diane Springer, and Nancy LaPointe also provided goodies for the volunteers.

Thank you again to Lowe’s, Oly 5-Star, and all of the volunteers in helping making the day a complete success.  The McCrosky’s couldn’t be happier.

PROJECT #2:  Lola Jones

Lola Jones is 90 years old and has lived in her home for 32 years.  Despite arthritis and some hearing loss, she gets around in her home fairly well, but is financially and physically unable to complete much needed repairs on her beloved home.  Her scope of work includes window replacement, installation of flashing around the chimney, repair of her damaged foundation, faucet replacement and yard work. We are still looking for a volunteer team for this October project and would love to hear from you if interested.

 PROJECT #3:  Phyllis Dahlquist

Phyllis Dahlquist is 84 years old and has lived in her Rochester home for 20 years.  Phyllis’ needs include insulation and sheetrock installation, trim placement around doorways to prevent the cold air that passes through her home, a taller toilet and handrails installation in the shower.  We are looking for volunteers for this October project also.

If you are interested in helping with either of these upcoming projects please contact Rebuilding Together Thurston County at 360-539-7830 or rebuildingtogetherTC@comcast.net.
