New at the 2013 Fair—Cider, Beer and Wine Tasting Event

It’s time to savor the best flavors that South Sound brewers, ciderists, and vintners have to offer at the new Savor South Sound beverage tasting event at this year’s fair.
The three-day event will feature nearly two dozen local producers with a focus on unique recipes, blends and techniques that bring out exceptional flavors with a Pacific Northwest touch. The event is presented by Thurston County, The Washington State University Thurston County Extension and Olympia’s Fish Brewing Company.
“The beverage tasting event is new this year, but it actually harkens back to the traditions that make county fairs so special,” said Lucas Patzek, Director of Thurston County WSU Extension and one of the organizers of the Savor South Sound event. “Before Washington was even a state, county fairs were sometimes the only time each year when farmers, craftsmen, and businessmen could market and showcase their products. Our goal with the Savor South Sound is to tap into that tradition and celebrate what’s growing and brewing right here in our own backyard. Hopefully it’s the start of a new tradition here at the fair.”
The Savor South Sound beverage tasting event will feature five cideries on Thursday, August 1, eight breweries on Friday, August 2 and five wineries on Saturday, August 3. Tastings will run from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. each day in the Heritage Hall Annex at the Thurston County Fair. Patrons must be 21 or over to enter the Savor South Sound event.
Tickets for the Savor South Sound beverage tasting can be purchased in advance for $20 at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/417919 or at the fair gates on August 1-3 for $22. Each ticket includes one-day admission to Savor South Sound and one-day admission to the fair, plus a commemorative tasting glass.
