“An intrepid priest and his plucky flock resist the corporate wolves. But a lone wolf still lurks in the shadows…”

Olympia native Kathie Deviny will read from and discuss her “cozy-style” mystery “Death in the Memorial Garden” at the Olympia Timberland Library after hours on Wednesday, March 13 from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. Books will be available for purchase.

Just as the rector of Seattle’s Grace Church is about to inter the ashes of one of its wealthy patronesses in the Memorial Garden, the sexton unearths a wine crate containing someone else’s ashes – identity unknown. Alongside the ashes is a distinctive pair of shoes. Not only are the patroness’s relatives furious at the interruption, but they soon have grounds for a lawsuit: yet another piece of the church’s tower comes crashing to the ground.

With their world falling in around them, Father Robert Vickers and his colorful staff members and volunteers put their heads together to solve the mystery of the anonymous ashes. They also need to save Grace Church from the developers … all in time for the Bishop’s visit.

Deviny was born and grew up in Olympia and spends summers here with her husband and their cat. She is retired from a career primarily in the criminal justice system. Her essays have been published in the Seattle Times and several magazines. “Death in the Memorial Garden” is her first novel. Deviny’s blog is at http://deviny.camelpress.com

Cozy mysteries, or “cozies,” are a type of crime fiction in which the crime and detection usually take place among a socially intimate community. Sex and violence tend to be downplayed or treated humorously.
