Portland artists Nadia Buyse and Stephen Slappe will tell stories from their past—hilarious and sometimes sad tales of friends and adventures. The presentation will be held after hours at the Olympia Timberland Library on Thursday, February 7 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Copies of Slappe’s new book, “People I Used to Know,” will be available to view or purchase.

First up: “THIS IS SO EMBARRASSING” Tour Diary entries by Buyse: “You meet a lot of people on the road… man. And then sometimes you doodle pictures of them on the backs of show fliers…” Next, “JB” by Slappe: “Appalachian madness, Heavy Metal, bad drugs, and text messages make appearances in this tale about an old friend from my home state of West Virginia.” A slide show accompanies the story.

People I Used To Know began as archived pictures on Slappe’s computer. Slappe manipulated the photos to erase the faces and skin and leave only kitchens, yards, living rooms, clothes and some mystery. He paired the photos with short phrases that describe his memories of the people.

Buyse is a trans-disciplinary visual artist and musician and a former Olympian. As a musician she has been in at least 30 bands she can remember. She has toured the United States and Europe, playing in music festivals, punk clubs, house shows and discotheques. She has also exhibited work internationally and nationally. She recently received an MFA in Visual Studies from the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA). http://themovieparty.blogspot.com

Slappe’s work has exhibited and screened internationally in venues such as the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s TBA Festival, The Horse Hospital (London), The Sarai Media Lab (New Delhi), Consolidated Works (Seattle), Centre for Contemporary Art (Glasgow), and Artists’ Television Access (San Francisco). Slappe is Chair of Video & Sound at PNCA.http://www.stephenslappe.com
