Fitness Goals Achieved At The South Sound YMCA

Early January is a popular time to define fitness goals.  Olympia residents turn to the South Sound YMCA as a premier workout facility in Thurston County.  With two convenient locations, the Sound Sound YMCA offers flexibility to help achieve your goals for 2013.

Both the Olympia Downtown Branch and Briggs Community Branch offer a well-stocked gym complete with cardio machines such as treadmills and recumbent bikes.  But, the Y is more than just a gym.  “We are interested in helping people make healthy changes in their lives, both physically and mentally,” explains Heather Racca, Senior Program Director at the Briggs branch of the South Sound YMCA.

For example, the Y calls their gym a “health and well-being center” which includes cardiovascular equipment, weight machines, and free weights.  The Y goes way beyond the offerings of traditional gyms.

At the Y, you will find:

  • a gymnasium for pick-up basketball games,
  • racquetball courts for high intensity matches,
  • swimming pools for low-impact workouts,
  • an indoor running track for rainy days,
  • cycling studios for speedy group fitness classes, and
  • customized personal training sessions.

While the Y supplies all the necessities for reaching your fitness goals, their approach is much different than other facilities.  “We provide support and a sense of community that you don’t get at other places in town,” adds Racca.  Because of this outlook, the Y staff creates programming that accommodates all members, from ages 3 months to 99 years old.

Every day, the Y works to strengthen the community and its fitness facilities are just one piece of creating lasting change.  As a nonprofit organization, the Y is here for everyone and financial assistance is available.

A complimentary well-being orientation is offered to all members.  Racca explains that during the orientation a Y staff member will provide advice on how to reach a member’s goals.  The orientation also includes a tour of the equipment.  “We want our members to feel comfortable asking questions or requesting help,” says Racca.

Group fitness classes are often a great place for new members to start.  Making connections with other members is a goal in these classes.  And with a wide range of offerings, there is sure to be a class that interests you.  Try an indoor cycling class or pick up a Les Mills aerobic workout.  Slip off your sneakers and join a yoga class.  Or get ready to shake in Zumba, a fast paced Latin dance class.

The South Sound YMCA’s fitness program is an affordable and accessible resource to develop your spirit, mind, and body through recreational programs.  And, while you are running on the treadmill or attending a group fitness class with a friend, check out the wide range of other programs that brings the community together for the common good.
