On Friday, December 21, Westport Winery co-owner Kim Roberts was surprised to open her mail and discover she was on the cover of Wine & Grape Grower Magazine. “There’s something surreal about seeing yourself on a magazine cover when you don’t know it’s coming,” Roberts said. In this December/January issue of this national publication Westport Winery is featured in two stories.

The first article is on their challenge in owning the westernmost vineyard in Washington State. The second article is on their community contributions and agricultural conservation practices. It was one of those practices that brought their Vineyards by-the-Sea to the editor’s attention. “In September we brought in 250 goats from a business in Edwall, Washington, called Healing Hooves. They were tasked with clearing and cleaning a steep riparian area on the farm,” according to Blain Roberts, the other owner of the project.

For the Roberts who recently added a plant nursery and garden center to their busy farm this article is a welcome endorsement of years of hard work. “We are on the edge of the area Dr. Greg Jones studied and determined was viable for viticulture,” according to the Roberts’ son and winemaker Dana Roberts who is taking over managing the farm. “It’s been a steep learning curve with many challenges.”

In this award-winning family business even Carrie, the couple’s daughter and general manager of the winery, is hands-on with some of the crops as she grows blueberries and apples in her home’s yard for the farm’s fresh produce stand. “We’ve done a great job of fencing the crops, but I can tell you, my family’s dogs help in protecting the crops from deer, elk and even birds.”

Westport Winery, Restaurant, Bakery and Nursery is open daily at 11a.m. The winery with its extraordinary outdoor sculpture garden and unique grape maze is located on the corner of Highway 105 and South Arbor Road halfway between Westport and Aberdeen.
