To open its 5thseason, Seattle Jewish Chorale is pleased to invite the entire South Sound community to an interactive, family-friendly concert, Light the Candles: A Hanukkah Celebration for Everyone! The concert will take place Sunday, December 9, 4pm at Temple Beth Hatfiloh (201 8th Avenue SE, Olympia, 98501). Special guests Kol N’Shama: the TBH Choir, will join the Chorale, and Rabbi Seth Goldstein will lead a community menorah lighting.

For Jews and non-Jews alike, this is a wonderful opportunity to learn about and enjoy the Hanukkah holiday! Come hear and sing songs of the season in Hebrew, English, Yiddish and Ladino—some traditional and familiar, some new and surprising. Contemporary favorites will include Tom Lehrer’s jazzy and humorous Chanukah in Santa Monica and Debbie Friedman’s Build This World, a lively, gospel-style song of unity and peace for all people. Following the concert, the audience is invited to a reception and holiday bake sale to benefit the Chorale.

This concert is not only Seattle Jewish Chorale’s Olympia debut, but their first performance outside of Greater Seattle. It is also part of a year-long series of events from 2012-2013 celebrating the 75th anniversary of Temple Beth Hatfiloh. Incorporated in 1937, the congregation completed its first building in 1938 and has served as a center for Jewish life in Olympia and the surrounding area since. Other scheduled events include a gala dinner honoring the TBH founding families, a speaker on Washington Jewish history, the 25th anniversary of Blintzapalooza, a community food event that raises money for local charities, and a street fair.

Founded in 2008, Seattle Jewish Chorale is a non-profit, volunteer-based, auditioned community chorus, open to members of all backgrounds, beliefs and orientations. It is the only independent community choir in Washington State devoted to the music of the Jewish people. Through its educational and entertaining performances, Seattle Jewish Chorale preserves, celebrates and advances the cultural heritage of world Jewry, and fosters unity, understanding and respect with the Jewish community and between Jews and the wider community.

Seattle Jewish Chorale is conducted by Music Director Mary Pat Graham and accompanied by pianist Harumi Makiyama, joined on this concert by guest artists Will Dowd (percussion); and John Stiffler (clarinet). An additional concert will be presented in Bellevue on December 12. Tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com (1.800.838.3006) or at the door. Admission prices are: Adults $12 / Students & Seniors $10 / Children (under 12) $6 / Un(der)employed: Pay as able.
