Annual Longhouse Holiday Native Art Fair Scheduled For This Weekend At The Evergreen State College

The Longhouse at The Evergreen State College will be hosting the annual Longhouse Holiday Native Art Fair Friday December 7 and Saturday December 8, 2012 at the Longhouse. The fair starts at 11:00 AM on Friday and runs until 6 PM and begins again on Saturday at 10:00 AM and runs until 5 PM.

This year’s fair features Native art work in carving, weaving, print making, painting, jewelry, textiles, and clothing. The fair features some of the most renown artists of the region including carver, David Boxley (Tsimshian) who has work in museums and collections across the world as well as award winning artists from the Sante Fe Indian market, the Heard and the Eiteljorg markets like Peter Boome (Upper Skagit), Terrance Guardipee (Blackfeet), Linley Logan (Seneca) and Nelson Garcia (Santo Domingo Pueblo). The show includes some of the regions foremost Salish artists like Fran James and her son Bill James (Lummi).

The market is truly a collector’s market but also has fantastic works from artists representing the Southwest region, Makah, Yakama, and the Puget Sound region that is affordable and one of a kind.

At two each afternoon, music by Ojibwe flutist Darren Thompson will be featured.  Thompson is a Native American flute player from the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe Reservation in Northern Wisconsin. He has spent most of his adult life serving communities through leadership development, capacity building, American Indian cultural awareness workshops, and the arts.

Visitors can purchase Indian tacos and frybread provided by the Evergreen Native Student Alliance.
