At approximately 6:15 yesterday morning (Sunday, July 15), Tumwater Fire Department responded to a reported fire on the roof of the Happy Teriyaki on Capitol Boulevard in Tumwater.  The fire was quickly contained to the sign and exterior wall.

TCOMM 911 received a call from an alter passerby who reported flames on the roof of the building.  Upon arrival of the first engine, from Tumwater’s North End Station, it was noted that only one half of the sign was illuminated and flames were running up the side of the building from it.  The fire was quickly extinguished and a primary search of the building conducted.  Due to the quick response there was no smoke or fire extension to the inside of the restaurant.  Damage appeared to be less than $10,000.  Cause of the fire is still under investigation.

It was fortunate that the North End Fire Station was staffed which allowed for a quicker response.  This fact, combined with the quick thinking of the alert passerby, saved the situation from being a multi-million dollar fire loss, not to mention the impact of the potential loss of a popular Tumwater lunch spot.

Olympia, McLane/Black Lake and East Olympia Fire Departments also responded and assisted the Tumwater crews.
