OLYMPIA: Local entrepreneurs Jeremy Carter and John Evans are excited that several of their one-of-a-kind landscape wood pieces are a part of the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibit that opens May 21, 2012.
As luck would have it, Chihuly’s representative drove by and noticed the stockpile of landscape wood that was on display at Carter Evans Wood Concepts yard in Elma, WA. Carter and Evans then worked closely with Chihuly’s team to ensure the desired pieces were selected and delivered to the site at the base of the Space Needle.
Over 20 years ago Carter Evans Wood Concepts had the foresight to salvage this unique wood from the Olympic Peninsula forest floor. The wood would either be abandoned on the forest floor or destined for the chip mill because it had little value to the lumber industry. These unique pieces of rejected, twisted, partially rotten, thrown away trees are “diamonds in the rough”. Nature has turned these into beautiful natural pieces of art. The cedar landscape wood ranges from 250-500 years old. These pieces of wood age slowly and will last for many generations to come. Carter Evans Wood Concepts leaves most of the landscape wood just as it came out of the forest, but they can also modify for individuals personal needs. The pieces of wood range in size from ones you can throw in the trunk of your car up to 8,000 pounds that can be delivered.
On May 21st, The Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibition will bring a transformative and inspirational experience to Northwest residences. The Seattle Center project will be the most comprehensive presentation of Chihuly’s artwork on public display. The 1.5 acres of exhibition space will feature indoor and outdoor art installations.
- The12,208 square-foot indoor pavilion will feature important works such as: a Neon and Glass Forest, a Northwest Room, a Sealife Tower, a Persian Ceiling, a Mille Fiori Platform, a Boat, a Chandelier Room, and a Macchia Forest.
- The indoor pavilion will also include a publicly accessible café with an outdoor patio, a 2,400 square foot retail/bookstore, and a 50 seat theater and lecture hall.
- A 43-foot tall Glass House encompassing 4,500 square feet, will feature five large Chandeliers composed of red and yellow Persians designed by Chihuly to intermix and appear as one expansive installation.
- The outdoor garden space will be 16,000 square feet, plus another 4,500 square feet for the outdoor plaza between the Glass House and the indoor pavilion.
- The outdoor garden space will feature are work including: seven walkway Chandeliers which will run along the edge of the pavilion, a 16’ diameter Sun, a green and yellow Icicle Tower, red, blue, and neodymium Reeds, a Pink Crystal Tower, Ikebana, Cattails, Fiddleheads, Herons, Floats, and Seal Pups.
The exhibit opens May, 21st and will be an amazing display highlighting the wide breadth and scope of Chihuly’s celebrated career. The project removes 30,000 square feet of 50 year old grease topped asphalt, replacing it with landscaping and art with a sustainable design.
