Bicycle Racers Converge on Olympia

This weekend nearly 250 cyclists from all over the Pacific Northwest descended upon Olympia for the inaugural running of the Capital Stage Race.  The three-day four-race event took place on roads in and around Olympia. 

Friday’s Stage One road race saw racers circuiting the Capital Forests on Waddle Creek and Delphi Road.  Early morning walkers and runners around Capital Lake on Saturday were witness to the time trial which utilized an out-and-back section of the Deschutes Parkway.  The Capitol Campus played host to the Stage Three Criterium on Saturday afternoon and early evening.  Sunday concluded with Stage 4, a 90 mile race traversing roads from Grand Mound to Elma and back again.

Local riders earning individual podium spots include: Jennifer Burtner, 2nd in the Women’s Pro 1-2 Stage 1 Road Race, 2nd in the Criterium and 2nd in the Stage 4 Road Race; Lauren Cramer: 3rd in the Women’s Category 4 Stage 1 Road Race, 1st in the Time Trial and 2nd in the Criterium; Jim Holbrooks, 3rd in the Men’s Category 3 Time Trial; Andrea Kopp 2nd in the Men’s Category 5 Criterium and 2nd in the Stage 4 Road Race; Tom Potter, 2nd in the Men’s Masters Time Trial; Anthony Whiley: 2nd in the Men’s Masters Stage 4 Road Race.

General Classification or GC prizes are awarded based upon lowest cumulative time over the four stages  as well as time bonuses for top 3 finishes and prime laps during the criterium.

Men’s Masters: Scott Torkelson – Old Town Bicycle

Men’s Category 4: Travis Biechele – CycleU

Women’s Category 4: Lori Swanson – Old Town Bicycle

Men’s Category 5: Martin Turek – Eastgate Cycling Club
