Mary Dean, who has served on the Lacey City Council for 11 years,  announced her resignation from the council Thursday night,  effective December 31.

In making the announcement at the end of the regular council meeting, Dean said it was a difficult decision.  “I’m proud to have represented the citizens of Lacey and work with the council and staff for the past 11 years,” she said.  “It’s been a joy to work, play and raise our family in Lacey over the past 31 years.”

Dean said she and her husband Roger were moving to Georgia to be close to their only child and only grandchild.

The council will select someone to fill out the one year remaining of Dean’s time.

At least three Lacey resident have expressed an interest in running for the seat next November and will be strong candidates for appointment to the vacancy.

Former Lacey mayor Jon Halvorson is exploring the idea of seeking re-election to the Lacey council.   Lacey Planning Commission member Carolyn St.Claire said she was definitely running, while another planning commission member Lenny Greenstein is also considering running for the council this coming year.

Resignation and appointment to the Lacey City Council, is the way most members get a seat.  Rarely does someone serve a full term in office and leave when the term is up.  Most resign from the Council and allow the current members to appoint someone, usually from the planning commission.

Also up for re-election to the council this coming year are Councilmembers Tom Nelson and Jason Hearn.  Nelson, serving as mayor this year, said he will make a decision on whether or not to seek re-election in April or May.  Hearn will say only that he enjoys serving on the council.
