Penrose Physical Therapy in Lacey Provides Transformative Relief to a Patient with a Surprising Source of Pain

Carmen Marchel gives kudos to Penrose & Associates Physical Therapy in Lacey for correctly identifying and treating back and shoulder pains that were accompanied by headaches and vision problems. Marchel thought she was having a flare-up from an earlier rotator cuff issue. But Penrose staff diagnosed the surprising source of her discomfort as a long-ago jaw injury. And today, those problems have disappeared.

Penrose Therapy Staff Work With Patients to Diagnose the Source of Their Pain

“’It’s not your shoulder at all. It’s your jaw,’” she says Dr. Kylie Starr told her. Starr is on the team at Penrose Physical Therapy, which was founded by Dr. Jennifer Penrose.

Marchel’s jaw had been dislocated at age 18. Since then, she has had multiple problems including headaches and blurry vision. “It was so bad. I would get up in the morning and my right eye would be so blurry that I could not get my balance,” she says. “And often a headache would hit. I never knew when I woke up if it would get better or worse during the day.”

Difficulty in fully opening her jaw was another problem she thought she just had to live with. Marchel could not comfortably eat foods like raw carrots, and she had to flatten a hamburger before chewing.

However, she did not connect her jaw dislocation history to her current pains, until receiving the diagnosis from Penrose Physical Therapy.

Physical Therapy at Penrose Provides Transforming Relief

After Penrose staff correctly located the source of her problems, they began working with Marchel’s jaw muscles. She says she experienced tremendous relief. “The opening of my mouth increased from 1.5 centimeters to 4.5 centimeters,” she says. “My headaches and blurry vision stopped. It was all tied to my jaw.”

Marchel says her headache, vision and jaw difficulties especially had created an “awful” way to live. When invited to social events, she had to give a caveat each time. “I would say, ‘depending on how I feel,’” she explains. “I couldn’t even count on going to lunch.” Marchel says her transformation after receiving treatment at Penrose has been “unbelievable.”
