The City of Lacey is hosting a series of online and in-person community open houses to review its Neighborhood Commercial Districts (Districts). The first in-person event will be held on Tuesday, November 15 at Salish Middle School in the Commons, beginning at 6 p.m. and running until around 8 p.m.

This is the first in a series of online and in-person open house events that will take place in the coming months. These events offer opportunities to meet with neighbors and City staff, learn about existing zoning standards, ask questions, and provide thoughts and ideas on how to update these Districts to better reflect the needs of the Lacey community.

Lacey Neighborhood Commercial Districts

The City of Lacey Municipal Code (Chapter 16.36) describes Lacey’s existing Neighborhood Commercial Districts in greater detail. The intent of these Districts is to:

  • Provide the opportunity for the development of small commercial facilities in residential areas catering to the day to day needs of consumers for a limited range of convenience goods and services;
  • Limit such commercial facilities as to size of site, bulk of structures, and to such locations as to serve a relatively large number of persons in a relatively small geographic area. To that end, pedestrian accessibility shall be a major criterion in the location of neighborhood commercial facilities;
  • Provide neighborhood commercial zones near residential areas to provide opportunities for neighborhood shopping and services with pedestrian accessibility.

“To ensure we hear from as many individuals as possible, this event is being offered in a hybrid format, with in-person and online opportunities to review content and share ideas. All exhibits and information offered at the in-person event, will also be available on the City website.” says Hans Shepherd, Lacey project lead. “Participants can review exhibits and share ideas about what they like, what they don’t like, and what they want to see in their neighborhoods through the online survey.”

Exhibits will cover the history of Neighborhood Commercial Districts, how they got to be what they are today, how an application turns into a project, existing codes, and future opportunities to share ideas and connect with City staff.

Lacey Neighborhood Commercial District Survey

The City of Lacey Neighborhood Commercial District Survey is officially live. It will also be accessible through the City website and at the in-person Open House. While the open house is scheduled for the 15th, the survey will run through the end of December giving community members additional time to review materials and provide feedback.

It is the City’s hope that as many people as possible will attend the open house in person or online, and fill out this survey to provide their feedback and suggestions. It is the City’s goal to collect as many ideas and perspectives from as many backgrounds and lived experiences as possible.

To ensure project transparency, community survey results will be published to the project webpage along with future project content at each stage of the update.

Watch the City of Lacey Events page for more information, including event materials, an online survey, and additional participation options.
