UPDATE: We are so sorry for the bad news, but the film distributor has pulled our “Top Gun” showing due to the sequel coming out next year.

In it’s place we will be presenting “Indiana Jones: Raiders Of The Lost Ark.”

If you purchased tickets for Top Gun, please stop into the cinemas or call our customer service line 360-458-8933 and we can switch you to a different 80s week movie or refund your purchase.

Dust off your leg warmers and acid-washed jeans: The ‘80s are back, at least for one week in August. Yelm Cinemas will host five consecutive nights of quintessential films from the neon decade, starting with the classic “The Princess Bride” on Sunday, August 11.

Some of the movies were blockbusters right out of the gate while others gained traction over time, eventually achieving cult classic status. “The Princess Bride” is a case in point; on its release in 1987, it was beloved by critics but attracted relatively small audiences. In the interim it has been inducted into the National Film Registry (NFR) and appears regularly on the top 100 movie lists, coining catchphrases like “Inconceivable!” and “Hello! My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

Similarly, “The Goonies” (showing on Monday, August 12) experienced a slow burn before creating a cult following. It has also been inducted into the NFR, which selects films for preservation within the Library of Congress for being culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.

Shifting gears, on Tuesday, August 13 the feature presentation will be the original “Die Hard” with Bruce Willis’s John McClane pitted against a group of terrorists led by Alan Rickman. Prior to the screening the Uptown Lounge will host a ‘80’s action movie trivia night beginning earlier than normal. “We put out a ballot to find out when our regular trivia night guests would prefer to start,” says General Manager Wayne McCarten. “It turns out they’d rather show up earlier than 7:00 p.m. The start time for the 80’s trivia will be 5:30 p.m. at the latest.”

Wednesday, Arnold Schwarzenegger fans can enjoy a reshowing of the 1987 science fiction action flick “Predator.” A huge hit on release, the film spawned multiple sequels and was rated as one of the best action films of all time on a 2015 Rolling Stone readers’ poll.

The week will wrap up on Thursday, August 15 with “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Who doesn’t want to see one of Harrison Ford’s most well-known characters return to the big screen? It will be a night of thrilling adventure you won’t want to miss.

Look forward to ‘80’s themed activities throughout the week. Although these have yet to be fully determined, Yelm Cinemas General Manager Noah Aden says a Christmas sweater party is likely on the table and day-glo is probably not far behind.
