Window Seat Media and Senior Services for South Sound are partnering on an oral history project through Senior Services Lifelong Learning Program. “The Third Thirty” – an 8-week project-based course – explores the time of life between age 60-90. How does the time and place we were born shape how we experience this period of time? What challenges and gifts come in this thirty years of life? How do we want to be remembered? Students explore these and other questions while learning the art and practice of oral history, building their listening skills, and considering the ethical issues of gathering and sharing other peoples’ stories.

On Thursday, May 30 at 12:00 p.m. course participants will gather at The Olympia Center in Room 100 to share excerpts from the oral histories they collected and reflect on the experience with fellow participants and their narrators. The event is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and light snacks will be served.

“We are not only building a community archive that people can access online to understand the unique challenges, gifts, and experiences of this generation,” says Elaine Vradenburgh, Curator of Window Seat Media and Project Facilitator, we are also building a community of practice that is grounded in deep listening, asking transformative questions, and honoring the knowledge that comes from our lived experience. Through the process of both gathering and sharing stories of their peers, seniors have the opportunity to deepen their connection to each other and honor the life and work of someone they admire in our community.

Window Seat Media is a collaborative of multimedia storytellers who work with organizations in the South Puget Sound region to amplify stories on the margins. We do this because we believe we write our future with the stories we narrate, and we are committed to co-creating an inclusive, connected, and just world.
