Event organizers are gearing up for this second annual community-wide event that brings together school, community and business leaders to discuss topics impacting the health and future of youth and families in the greater Tumwater area.

Tumwater Community Summit 2018 will focus on homelessness and poverty – both the challenges faced by homeless populations and the factors that contribute to poverty.

Tumwater City Administrator John Doan and Tumwater School Superintendent John Bash hope participants learn more about the realities of homelessness, and how to effectively connect and support families in poverty. “It’s our goal that this year’s Summit will inspire us to look for what we can do, as individuals and as a community, to find better outcomes for people in poverty,” says Doan.

The event includes a pre-summit session designed for educators, individuals and organizations that provide services to homeless and at-risk youth.

The Community Summit begins at 5 p.m. with dinner and special guest Dr. Donna Beegle, Co-Founder and President of Communication Across Barriers, whose mission is to help communities “fight poverty, not those who live in it.”

Dr. Beegle inspires and educates individuals, organizations, politicians and entire communities with proven models to better outcomes for people in poverty.

Following dinner and a keynote address by Dr. Beegle, there will be breakout sessions for participants to discuss several topics related to poverty, homelessness and community resources.

During the breakout sessions, Dr. Beegle will introduce The Opportunity Community Model™, a movement designed to create communities “where all members thrive and are connected to one another.” The model removes the shame that poverty teaches, and rebuilds hope that poverty steals.

Business leaders and community members who are looking for effective approaches to fighting poverty and homelessness are encouraged to join students, families and educators at Tumwater Community Summit 2018.
